Lian Chhing Pui comes from Burma where she belongs to a Christian minority called the Chin people. In Burma she was politically active and supported an opposition group fighting for democracy, minority rights and equality.
Because of her active role and support for the pro-democracy movement Lian has been named as an enemy by the current Burmese ruling military regime. She was harassed by the security forces, but managed to escape before she could be imprisoned. To escape she entered India illegally but could not claim asylum there. Fearing deportation back to Burma if the police caught her, she fled to the UK using a false Indian passport, and sought asylum here in 2005. Her application for temporary leave to remain has been turned down twice by the Home Office. They agreed that if she were Burmese, they would not deport her, but they claim that the passport is authentic, and that she is therefore an Indian citizen and should be deported back to India, where the Indian authorities would either imprison her for using a false passport or, more likely, deport her back to Burma. Lian hopes to be allowed to appeal. Please sign her petition and support her campaign. |
